Send to Print / Print to Send offers an impression of uses of 3D Printing* in the design industry today. This timely exhibition shows work by designers and organisations who are developing the capabilities of this technology. In addition it will include examples of the increasingly important role 3D Printing plays in the design process, particularly during the complex prototyping stages.

Joshua Silver has invented a spectacle design which relies on the principle that the fatter the lens, the more powerful it becomes. The lenses are filled with liquid, and can be adjusted to different strengths by adding or removing fluid from tiny syringes on each arm, then locked to the right strength. More than 30,000 of his lenses have been distributed in 15 countries - a great idea!

Chloë McCormick & Nicholas O’Donnell-Hoare for Digits2Widgets (D2W)

The pieces are the result of exploring new technologies and their infinite scope of use within contemporary jewellery design. The collection had been designed through 3-dimentional scanning of the body which was then manipulated with the use of the 3D programme, Rhino 3d. This piece has been designed to showcase the technology which is pushing the boundaries of jewellery design to new levels. The neckpiece has been created in one piece; there are no joins, no fault lines, no links, no extra materials, no soldering, just one piece of nylon. After the initial designs were developed, the neckpiece was then build up in layers of nylon using a laser-sintering machine. The careful choice of material means the entire collection can be up cycled at a later date to create new and useful new items, or, thanks to the durability of the nylon it can be kept to cherish for generations.

Colour Workshop with Brave New Alps and RCA

I was invited by Brave New Alps, led by Bianca Elzenbaumer and Fabio Franz, to present my perception on colour consideration in design at the Royal College of Art. In collaboration with Alison Thomson, we also showed our film based on moments of colour harmonies in everyday life, titled 'Colour'. Check out Brave New Alps for all the information.

13:00 Presentation Formal with Maki Suzuki and Kajsa Ståhl from Åbäke (who wants to join in should bring a salad ingredient and a question about their practice).

15:00 Across RCA, previously known as Thinking & Practice Group hold one of their sessions in the gallery. Come along to share some thoughts about what you’re currently working on.

When in flight, the upper surface of the wing continually change from bright blue to dull brown because the angle of the light striking the wings change

Use their colour as a deterrent to other animals not to come near them

Psychedelic Hemipteran Bug
The animal uses their green spots to hide among the plants and grass areas

Bird of Paradise
The male uses it's elaborate plumage in their mating displays to the female. The female chooses the strongest, most brightly coloured male, as their offspring is likely to be healthier
